After a student vote in 1974 Baylor's president Samuel Palmer Brooks had a competition to find an athletics team mascot. Out of over two dozen choices the students picked The Baylor Bears. The Bears team colors are green and gold and their team mascot is Judge and Bruiser.

Judge is the name given to all the live bear mascots at Baylor and their has been a live bear as their mascot since 1917, a businessman named Herbert E. Mayr won the first one in a poker game and donated him to Baylor University. Bruiser is the costumed mascot of the team and wears a variation of the teams uniform.
