His short track racing skills got the attention of some Winston Cup Series owners and got his first Cup race in 1975 at Charlotte Motor Speedway he finished 22nd. In 1978 Dale replaced a driver in the World 600 Cup in Charlotte North Carolina. His driving skills and competitive instincts caught the attention of Rod Osterland. Rod Osterland hired him to drive his car and after 16 races “The Intimidator” got his first win. In 1979 Dale won Rookie of the year. In 1980 Dale won his first Winston Cup Championship. Dale's black and silver Chevy with the #3 became his trademark. He was Known as the Intimidator and The man in Black. In 2000 Dale's son Dale Jr. joned his father full time in the Nascar Circuit. Dale Jr. won his first Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway in only his 12th career start. In August of that year Dale would get the opportunity to race against both of his sons Kerry and Dale Jr. Dale had 76 career wins and won the Winston Cup Championship 7 times. After 20 years of trying Dale finally won the Daytona 500 in 1998. The same track that would take his life just three years later on the last lap of the race, Dale was in a fatal wreck february 18th, 2001. Dale left behind four children Kerry, Kelley, Dale Jr., and Taylor and his wife Teresa .
