Johnson started racing in the Cup SeriesIn 2002 Johnson started racing in the Cup Series. He won 3 races and had 21 top 10 place finishes. Johnson got his first win at his home track California speedway. Johnson also swept both Dover races. In 2003 Johnson finished 2nd in the points standings to Matt Kenseth with 3 wins one at Lowe's Motor speedway and sweeping both races at New Hampshire International Speedway . That year Johnson had 20 top 10's and 14 top 5 finishes. In 2004 Johnson won 8 races He finished second in the points standings by 8 points to Kurt Bush. Johnson had 23 top 10's and 20 top 5's. Johnson led at least one lap in 24 of the races with 1,312 laps led. More than any other driver that season. In 2005 Johnson won 4 races that year and stayed in the top five in the points standings the whole season. With 22 top 10 finishes and 13 top 5's.
