Championship at an early age

Jimmie Johnson started out racing motocross motorcycles, by the time he was 8 years old, even with a busted knee, he had won his first 60cc class championship. After motorcycles Jimmie started off-road racing in leagues like SODA, Sore International and MTEG. He won rookie of the year in all three. Jimmie was a reporter for ESPN in the SODA series.

Johnson began racing in the Busch Series

In 1998 Jimmie started racing on the pavement with 3 races in the Busch Series while finishing 4th and got Rookie of the year in his first full season in the American Speed Association (ASA).

In 1999 He continued racing in both series. He won 2 races and finished 3rd in the points in the ASA. Johnson got a 7th place finish in his first of 5 Busch Series races at The Milwaukee Mile.

In 2000 Johnson drove for Herzog Motorsports in the Busch Series where he finished 10th in the points. During the 2000 season Herzog Motorsports lost it's sponsorship with Altel as they moved to Penske Racing. Johnson asked Jeff Gordon for advice. With the recommendation of Gordon, Hendrick Motorsports offered him a ride.

In 2001 Johnson won a race at Chicagoland Speedway and finished 8th in the Busch Series points.

Johnson started racing in the Cup Series

In 2002 Johnson started racing in the Cup Series. He won 3 races and had 21 top 10 place finishes. Johnson got his first win at his home track California speedway. Johnson also swept both Dover races.

In 2003 Johnson finished 2nd in the points standings to Matt Kenseth with 3 wins one at Lowe's Motor speedway and sweeping both races at New Hampshire International Speedway . That year Johnson had 20 top 10's and 14 top 5 finishes.

In 2004 Johnson won 8 races He finished second in the points standings by 8 points to Kurt Bush. Johnson had 23 top 10's and 20 top 5's. Johnson led at least one lap in 24 of the races with 1,312 laps led. More than any other driver that season.

In 2005 Johnson won 4 races that year and stayed in the top five in the points standings the whole season. With 22 top 10 finishes and 13 top 5's. Johnson ended up 5th in the points standings.

1st Championship

In 2006 Jimmie Johnson won his first Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 along with 3 other races with 24 top 10's 13 top 5's. Johnson finished 1st in the points standings winning The Nascar Nextel Cup Championship.

2nd Championship

In 2007 Johnson joined 8 other drivers to win back to back Championships beating teammate Jeff Gordon by 77 points. Johnson one 4 straight races in a row, the only driver to do so since Jeff Gordon did it in 1998

3rd Championship

In 2008 Jimmie Johnson became the second driver to win 3 back to back Cup Championships. Cale Yarborough was the first to do it.
