Roots of Nascar

NASCAR got its roots from bootleg moonshine runners . From 1920 to 1933 The United States had a Prohibition on alcohol. So that the sale, manufacturing, and transport of alcohol was banned and mandated by the Eighteenth Amendment.

Outrunning the Law

To stay a step ahead of the police they modified cars to go fast and to hold as much moonshine as possible. The moonshine runners loved racing their cars fast down the twisty mountain roads. In 1933 the prohibition was lifted and put many of the bootleggers out of business. They used some of these modified cars for racing.

How NASCAR Got it's Name

Bill France and 35 other men met on December 14, 1947 at The Ebony Bar.. It took 4 days to to make the rules and to come up with the name NASCAR ( National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing). They made it official on February 21, 1948. The points system was written on a bar room napkin

Bill France thought that since there was a shortage of cars after the war people would be upset if they ran new cars and beat them up in races so they ran modified cars .

In 1949 Bill France had the Idea of racing cars that people drive on the street “stock” cars. Tires, wheels and suspension problems often occurred from the added stress of racing and not their intended use of normal road driving. These cars are the closest to the Nascar cars we see today.
